Foreword
India is the third-largest emitter of CO2 globally, with emissions exceeding 2.6 gigatonnes annually. While renewable energy has made remarkable strides in decarbonizing the power sector, hard-to-abate industries such as cement, steel, and oil & gas contribute another 33% of emissions, which require urgent attention. CCUS technology, with its potential to abate up to 750 million tonnes of CO2 per year by 2050, is emerging as a game-changer in our battle against climate change.
The Indian government is actively championing CCUS through initiatives like the 2030 Roadmap for CCUS, spearheaded by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, and investments from leading PSU’s & private operators with targets for net-zero operations between 2040-2046. Furthermore, India's geological storage capacity of 5-6 gigatonnes of CO2 provides a strong foundation for scaling CCUS projects.
